The Château de Prangins welcomes you to the exhibition Around the World-From Jules Verne to the First Globetrotters.
The 1870s saw the emergence of a new type of traveller: the globetrotter, like Phileas Fogg. The new temporary exhibition at the Château de Prangins follows in the footsteps of the thousands of tourists, most of them wealthy Westerners, who travelled around the world between 1869 and 1914. Among them were several Swiss men and women, who brought back stories, souvenirs and collections of objects from their stopovers in Egypt, India, Japan and the USA. The exhibition also shows how the round-the-world voyage became a ubiquitous motif in popular culture following the worldwide success of Jules Verne's novel, the original manuscripts of which are on display. Finally, it looks at the many devices that have been devised to enable people to travel around the world from the comfort of their own homes, in an armchair tourist.
