The Château de Coppet welcomes you to a lecture by Fred Stauffer entitled: " The great botanical explorers of Germaine de Staël's time ".
In this lecture we trace the complex pathways of the specimens collected by the scientists Humboldt and Bonpland between 1787 and 1804 in America, on their return to Europe. These collections are also used to establish the current location (and composition) of important sets of material associated with this voyage, as well as to explore the existing relationships between the specimens, the field notes contained in the Journal Botanique and the descriptions published in the various volumes of Nova Genera et Species Plantarum (1816-1825), which remains, without doubt, the expedition's most significant contribution to the taxonomy of Neotropical plants.
