At the end of the 19th century, Joseph Ferdinand Cheval was a simple postman in the Drôme. His solitary nature was upset by his meeting with the woman of his life, Philomène, and then by the birth of their daughter, Alice. For this child, whom he loves more than anything else, he threw himself body and soul into his life's work: building the "Ideal Palace" for her.
After a period of mourning, the mute Joseph Ferdinand Cheval remarries Philomène. They will soon have a daughter, Alice. On one of his rounds, the postman emeritus picks up the stone that has just knocked him down. Fascinated, he will make it the base of an unexpected building, this Palace that he will dedicate to the women of his life.
Postcard landscapes, revealing the natural beauty of the Drôme, alternate with the chiaroscuro of the interior scenes. The care given to the images enhances the wise and applied reconstruction of the fabulous destiny of the Horse Factor. A 33-year long path strewn with black stones. The tragedy sets this mason of the heart on fire, a passionate madman, ultimately recognised as a pioneer of naive architecture.
Here is a fresco highlighting an extraordinary life, with a sublime Jacques Gamblin in Ferdinand Cheval's interpretation.
