Jardin potager à l'ancienne Château de Prangins

Traditional kitchen garden, Castle of Prangins

Swiss National Museum - The gardens situated next to the Prangins castle are a replication of gardens cultivated back in the 18th Century.

You will find a remarkable assortment of historic fruit and flower as well as vegetables varieties which cultivated and consumed in the region, two and a half centuries ago.

Many of these plants, mostly forgotten today, are witnessing how people used to eat at the time. Therefore this garden is considered a living conservatory preserving a fragile heritage of rare species. It presents the historical, botanical, ethnological and ecological aspects of various plants and vegetables that used to exist in Switzerland at the time.

There are two innovative ways for visitors, young and old, to rediscover the plants grown in the kitchen garden of the Château de Prangins: an Interpretation Centre in the outhouse, and an audio-guide in several languages.

The Interpretation Centre helps you understand the issues associated with the kitchen garden of the castle. This interactive exhibition, for young and not so young, proposes four topics, each of them being devoted to a season and to an emblematic garden’s plant, exalted by the nature photographer Janine Jousson.
